From Greece to Ukraine: welcome to the new age of resistance

The left can learn from recent popular uprisings – the Arab spring, Greece or Turkey – that have no leaders, parties or common ideology, then build on the energy and imagination these movements have created

Protests against planned austerity measures, Syntagma square, Athens, Greece - 19 Jun 2011

On 17 June 2011, I was invited to address the Syntagma Square occupation in Athens. After the talks, following the usual procedure, members of the occupation who had their number drawn came to the front to speak to the 10,000 people present. One man in particular was shaking and trembling with evident symptoms of stagefright before his address. He then proceeded to give a beautiful talk in perfectly formed sentences and paragraphs, presenting a complete and persuasive plan for the future of the movement.

“How did you do it?” I asked him later. “I thought you were going to collapse.”

“When I started speaking,” he replied nonchalantly, “I was mouthing the words but someone else was speaking. A stranger inside me was dictating what to say.”

Many participants in the recent insurrections and revolts make similar statements. My recent work addresses this stranger in me (a usual description of the unconscious), this miraculous transubstantiation shared by people in different parts of the world. [1]

Again, 2014 will be full of struggles, actions and mobilisations for a real global change. THREE DAYS OF GLOBAL NETWORKS, DIGITAL CULTURE AND DISTRIBUTED POLICY IN BARCELONA

On October 25th, once again, the FCForum in Barcelona will analyse the advances of the past twelve months and will consider the future outlook in the struggle for democracy in the digital era, free culture and net neutrality.

Year after year, the FCForum serves as a civil society tool, to move forward, analyse and answer questions and observe practices that actively grapple with them. Continuing the work carried out at the FCForum in 2011 and 2012, which looked at the increasing use of the net as a tool for democratic transformation – this year it will go further into some specific issues, such as the use and misuse of Big Data, electronic voting and electronic money, and how citizens can use them to achieve a society worthy of being called democratic in the twentieth century.

A New Sort of Alliance for Another Europe | Transform! Europe

By Walter Baier

On 7-8 June the Alter Summit of the European peoples will be taking place at the Velodrome in Athens. An alliance of more than 150 organisations – including trade unions, social movements, NGOs and political actors – from all parts of Europe will present to the public a manifesto for the struggle for a democratic and social Europe.

Already today, six weeks before the beginning of the Alter Summit, the alliance turns out to be one of a new kind in its breadth: For the first time, big, militant trade unions with a rich tradition such as the CGT, CSC, FTGB, CGIL, the CCOO, TUC, CGT-P, Ver.di and many others I cannot list here for the sake of brevity (see website: www.altersummit.eu) and the European Federations of Transport Workers (ETF), of teachers (ETUC-E) and the employees in the public sector will stand side by side with the social movements, ranging from ATTAC, Greenpeace, the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN), the Transnational Institute, the Committee for the Abolition of the Third World Debt (CADTM), the League for Human Rights, the World March of Women to the movements of precarious people, Blockupy and the Indignants. Among the callers and supporters of the summit there are networks of academics, the EuroMemoGroup, the Économistes Atterrés, but also many artists. In eight countries national preparatory committees have been formed for the purpose of mobilisation. transform! europe and, in particular, its member organisations from Greece, France, Portugal and Italy have from the moment of its initiation been among those taking on responsibility in the movement.

The European Spring 2013 – A New Beginning? | Transnational Institute

27 March 2013, by Sol Trumbo Vila

The European Spring’s Days of Action, that targeted the EU Summit and its austerity agenda, provides important lessons on how to develop alliances between trade unions, grassroots movements and civil society organisations.

This article analyses these initial experiences as a contribution towards building more successful actions that aim to construct a pan-European social movement.

For a European Spring was launched as a call for action on March 13-14, 2013 supported by 73 organizations from 13 European countries. This has been the first significant effort since the crisis erupted in 2008 to build a pan-European movement focused on the European Union (EU) institutions and their role in intensifying the economic, political and social crisis throughout Europe.

‘For a European Spring’ is a call for actions, strikes and demonstrations all over Europe on the 13th of March, and for a pan-European demonstration and creative actions in the city of Brussels on the 14th of March.

It is targeted at the EU Spring Summit, where leaders from across the continent will assemble on the 14th and 15 to strengthen the European Council’s response to the crisis.

Click here for more info on the EU Spring Summit

The response to date from economic and political elites in the European Union amounts to a massive attack on welfare, social rights and democracy. This has been achieved by undermining democracy, reflected in EU policies including the imposition of austerity, demands for deep cuts in social spending, attempts to weaken labour laws and the roll back of hard earned labour rights.

Click here for more info on austerity policies and their impacts

This course of action is dangerous, profoundly unjust, and must be reversed. While these policies are designed to rescue big banks and big business, we, the vast majority, are made to pay for the excesses of the privileged.

All over Europe struggles and strikes are happening against these unjust policies. These struggles are our struggles, and we reject the violent attempts of European states to suppress them. Now is the time for solidarity across borders and sectors, to be the force to create real democracy and social justice. We are seeking to build a society where solutions, very different to those defended by the elites and imposed by the EU, can be proposed and discussed by everybody.

We call for actions, strikes and demonstrations on the 13th March across Europe as part of a week of European resistance, with a mass mobilisation on the 14th in Brussels targeting the EU Spring Summit. We will show those in power that our growing movement will, sooner or later, be strong enough to change the course of Europe in the interest of us all.

Click here to add your own action to the map [coming soon]

Slogans that everybody can use during the week of mobilisation:

– Abolish all EU-austerity treaties and legislation!

– For an ecological Transition!

– Disarm Financial Markets!

– Debt: Don’t owe, don’t pay!

– Fire the Troika, not the people!

Open Call to Join Forces for a Massive European Day of Action and Mobilisation During the EU Spring Summit in March 2013

Open call to join forces for a massive European day of action and mobilisation

During the EU Spring Summit in March 2013

Following the call for action launched at Firenze 10+10 to mobilize for an European a day of action around the Spring European Council Summit; social organizations, social movements, trade unions and citizens gathered in Brussels the 15th of December.

We had a constructive meeting in Brussels, we welcomed the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) call for a Day of Action around the Spring European Council Summit the 13th or 14th of March, but since neither the format, the alliance building, the concrete date was clear, we had to postpone several concrete decisions.

However the following was decided:

·         The day(s) of action will take place 13th and or 14th of March 2013, depending on the date of the ETUC demo.

·         The day of action will either consist of one (with both central and decentralized actions) or two days, one decentralized and one central in Brussels.

·         The following slogans were decided:

–                   Our Democracy against their austerity! (main slogan)

–                   Abolish all the austerity treaties and legislations!

–                   For an ecological Transition!

–                   Disarm Financial Markets!

–                   Debt: Don’t owe, don’t pay!
