The P2P Prince?: The form and the program of the transnational REvolutionary subjectivity

Below text is an excpert from unpublished and unedited 2012 article Another World, Now! Coming of the Transnational REvolutions and the P2P Prince.

The  modern  prince,  the  myth-prince,  cannot  be  a  real  person,  a  concrete individual. It can only be an organism, a complex element of society in which a collective will, which has  already been recognised and has to some  extent asserted itself in action, begins to take concrete form. (A. Gramsci)

Italian political activist and theorist Antonio Gramsci’s core concepts like hegemony, organic crisis, historic bloc, war of position and war of manoeuvre are central to our understanding of today’s complex global capitalist system as well as the catastrophic changes that are currently taking place in it. Referring to the original concept developed by Gramsci, global political economy theorist Stephen Gill describes the 2008 global financial turmoil as the manifestation of an organic crisis at the global level. [1] We can also read the outcomes of the global organic crisis following another neo-Gramscian theorist Robert Cox as a mixture of three scenarios he describes.[2] First one is a global (military) Keynesian recovery being pushed by the West. Regional wars moving from the periphery to the centre involving massive destruction of lives, cities and the nature, as we witness it happening since the 9/11. The second scenario is the rise of global fascism in tandem with the regional wars. This has also been happening, especially increasingly in the centre, since 2007; highlighting the race to the bottom caused by the strengthening of totalitarian forms of capitalism at the main contenders like China, Russia and India. Finally and the last scenario is accompanying transnational revolutions, like the uprisings in the northern Africa, Americas and Europe also happening.[3]

What brought humanity to this point is not a secret and also made clear by many thinkers, intellectuals, and activists. The above mentioned article by Gill is only one of the public records. It is very clear however where we have to drive history as the humanity, the third option: Transnational revolutions. Again, following Gramsci and Gill, we can think of the realisation of the transnational revolutions in relation to the ‘Prince’. For his time Gramsci thought of it as the collective subjectivity which will give the moral leadership to a wider counter-hegemonic historic bloc, and shape the form and content of the communist revolution in a national context. And it was the communist part of the working class. Gill referred to the anti- and alter-globalisation movement. Continue reading

The Escuelita Zapatista and its proposal to the movements | ROAR

By Leonidas Oikonomakis On August 19, 2013

After inviting 1.700 activists from around the world to celebrate autonomy with them, the Zapatistas send their alumn@s home to continue the struggle. The Zapatistas — the people who covered their faces in order to be seen, who once upon a time came down from the mountains accompanied by the Chiapaneca mist to conquer its cities and hearts — uncovered themselves for a while, and revealed the faces of their young, graduates of the Zapatista autonomous education, who undertook the responsibility to guide their 1.700 visitors in the autonomous Zapatista communities of Chiapas. To introduce them to their families, their mountains, their jungles and rivers. To work the land with them; to share their plate, however poor; to translate for them from Chol, Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Tojolabal or Mame into Castilian and vice versa; and to study together: to study how Zapatista autonomy is exercised; not only through the 4 books that the communities have worked very hard to produce, but also — most importantly — through lived experience: through seeing for themselves what Zapatista autonomy feels like.

Zapatistas celebrate 10 years of autonomy with ‘escuelita’| ROAR + message from OWSZapatista and SupMarcos

Post image for Zapatistas celebrate 10 years of autonomy with ‘escuelita’
following is an email from comrade OWSZapatista and attached is the last
communiqes from SupMarcos…

The Zapatistas invite 1.500 activists from all over the world to a
‘Little School of Liberty’ in Chiapas to learn from their experiment
with autonomy.

It was 10 years ago, on January 1, 2003, when — having exhausted the
road of dialogue with the government as well the one of a “big R”
Revolution that would overthrow the Mexican state — the Zapatistas of
Chiapas decided to “abandon the politics of demands, and with it, all
contact with the state.” Instead, they chose to concentrate on
building their own autonomous, horizontal forms of self-government
within their own territories and with their own means.

Report from Belo Horizonte – Brazil

The Popular Horizontal Assembly of Belo Horizonte (Assembleia Popular Horizontal) was the first assembly to emerge from the current Brazilian movement, in June 18th. The number of attendants was about 1000 people in the last sessions.

The assembly adopts a methodology inspired by the 15M, with the hand signs, working groups and so on. It’s inclusive and horizontal in the sense that participation is open to everyone. But’s it’s not consensual (we vote), neither nonpartisan (the movement is “suprapartisan”, they would say) nor non violent. Violence against property and the police is not encouraged, but it’s also not condemned.

I’d say that the composition of the assembly is somewhat similar to the World Social Forum, with members from left-wing political parties, unions, social movements, autonomous collectives, occupiers and individuals with no group affiliation working together. Because of this “left” orientation, the federal government of Dilma Roussef is spared from harsh critics.

#GLOBALP2P Video Conference with Simultaneous Interpretation on Mumble | Democracy and Life, transversal democracy

Indigenous, Arab Spring, Squares, Indignados, Occupy, Yo Soy!, Chapulcular, Hackers, Students, Artists, Designers, Activists,……

Today, 14 Jun, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

LIVE

[Google translation]

Representative democracy is going through the worst time in its history. The transformation to a participatory democracy, open, interactive, seems inevitable. However, we just got a new democratic paradigm. The direction of the labels / lines work # GobiernoAbierto, # DatosAbiertos and # Transparency seem insufficient. The new role of cities in politics seems to suggest a new order of powers in which the national, the regional, the local and the global go together. On the other hand, some governments are creating platforms and tools for citizen participation. But sometimes, participation is lower than expected. The community, the citizens, not just entering participatory mechanisms designed for power. And politics, political behavior is happening on other platforms, elsewhere, in other territories. In the era of Wi-Fi, mobile phones with free and ubiquitous information, real-time democracy possible. Democracy is something that can happen anywhere, at any time

Athens. Barcelona. Tunis. Cairo. Tripoli. Sana’a. Santiago. Bahrain. Wisconsin. Yo Soy 132. Indigandos. Red Square. #OccupyWallStreet. Pussy Riot. Blockupy. Damascus. #IdleNoMore … Istanbul.

What can we learn from the beating heart of Gezi Park, the blood soaked Taksim concrete, the barricades of Besiktas? One thing: the dream of a Global Spring is not dead. It is still in its infancy, kicking and screaming.

Look around! This is what democracy looks like. The future is being built as we speak. What will it be? Singularity, or Nightfall? A sane sustainable future or a 1000 year Dark Age?

Dare to dance without knowing the next step. And then take that step with others. Beijing, you’re next. London, Moscow, Delhi and Ottawa. Then … we retake New York.

As the second anniversary of Occupy approaches, the indignation, the precarity, the gnawing feeling that life under corpo-capitalism is a dead-end –and that the future it leads to does not compute – is culminating into some kind of global big bang. The world as we know it must burst. The call is out for a new way of being … and it is being heard. A chain reaction of refusal against corpo-capitalism is underway. The global insurrectionary pulse is going steady, and now, racing forward.

Support the Global Square gathering of grassroots activists in Tunis!

Several participants of social movements have been lately meeting each other at different spaces during 2012 like Agora99 in Madrid,  Firenze 10+10 in Florence. In Florence we have organized an assembly on the city streets that managed to strengthen the link between the Forum space and the local inhabitants. Moreover we felt useful, participating in the facilitation of the process of the forum itself. Now, we want to do something similar at the World Social Forum. But this time we want to prepare it better. We will need a few phone SIM cards, printing materials and other stuff to make our contribution to the official program of the WSF.

We are organizing, at least:
– a series of assemblies in open spaces within the Forum, with dynamics that will encourage participation. They will be 3 assemblies and, perhaps, one more for the convergence process.
– a few workshops to share our skills on communication tools management, facilitation, the relation between unions and social movements and other topics. In total 5 workshops.

Networked solidarity? An open workshop during the WSF in Tunis on the interactions between labour, NGOs, political groups and the squares

Group logo of Networked solidarity?

Public Group on Global Square website to prepare the workshop

General objective of the workshop is to evaluate the recent experiences of networking and solidarity between, on the one hand, the horizontal square movements, free information movements, student movements, indigenous movements and so on, and on the other more vertical political groups and institutions like progressive unions, NGOs and civil society organisations.

We would like to pay particular attention on the new experiences of solidarity that has put forward an emancipatory vision instead of or together with a vision of positive changes within the existing system. Important examples were Spanish, Greek, UK, and 14N general strikes in Europe, Oakland, West Coast, May 1st general strikes and Walmart strikes where students, artists, hackers, IWW or other unions’ members, Occupy activists have closely collaborated. These are only several among many interactions happening between rank and file labour activists, community and union organisers and activists from new horizontal grass-roots movements in recent years. Besides there have been many factory, work place, hospital, university, public space occupations we need to learn from.

HomeThere is a significant knowledge created through such experiences that is essential for our walk to dignity, in order to see possibilities for alliances that could harmonise many struggles to create better worlds. We would like to contribute to the on-going exchanges by opening this space during the World Social Forum in Tunis, where various activists from different generations, regions and movements will meet each other

Invitation: GlobalSquare online meeting, Sunday 3 February 2013

Next meeting of GlobalSquare (also known as Occupy the WSF initiative)

  • Location: Occupytalk.org server, room: Assemblies & Round Tables > OPEN SPACE (Mumble instructions below)

  • Time: 19.00 GMT/UTC, check your local time here: time zone converter

About our initiative

From 26-30 March 2013 the World Social Forum (WSF) will take place in Tunis. The WSF is a global meeting, held regularly since 2001, bringing together civil society organisations, social movements and activists to discuss our struggles to build another world.

A diverse group of individuals, active in 15M, Occupy and other grassroots movements and networks around the globe, started to discuss the possibilities to participate in the WSF in Tunisia, recognizing this can be the right time and place to come together and share our experiences and practices. GlobalSquare is an initiative to mobilize and organize together towards, around and beyond the World Social Forum. Read more……

Kayiki Press Release: “Grief itself is not enough” End Europa’s merciless massacres!

KAYIKI PRESS RELEASE

18.01.2013
“Grief itself is not enough”
On Sunday January 13, 2013 three corpses have been found on the seashore of south Chios Island. They belonged to refugees trying to cross the European borders. On December 15 a refugee boat heading from Turkey to Greece capsized near Lesvos Island, twenty eight people – including women and children- tragically drowned. Earlier, on September 6, sixty three people lost their lives in a tragic shipwreck near the coast of Izmir, more than half of whom were children.
